- Anda teadmisi elektrimaterjalides (isoleermaterjalides, pooljuhtides, juhtides ja magnetmaterjalides) elektri- ja magnetväljades toimuvatest peamistest protsessidest ja materjalide kasutamisest tugevvoolu elektriseadmetes.
- Anda oskusi elektrimaterjalide katsetamiseks ja füüsikaliste omaduste mõõtmiseks.
- Anda üldteadmised ja oskused materjalide põhilistest mehaanilistest katsemeetoditest, mehaanilise katsemeetodite valiku põhimõtetest ja katsetuste läbiviimisest.
course aims in English
- Gives scholarship about main processes in electrical materials (insulating materials, semiconductors, conductors and magnetic materials) in electric and magnetic fields and about use of materials in high-current equipment.
- Gives knowledge for measuring and testing of different materials in electric and magnetic fields.
- To provide basic skills and knowledge of the main material mechanical testing methods, to select and carry out mechanical testing.

Üliõpilane:
- kirjeldab materjalide elektriliste ja magnetiliste omaduste põhjal üldisi seoseid aine ehitusega;
- kirjeldab isoleermaterjalide elektrijuhtivust ja mitmesuguste tegurite mõju elektrijuhtivusele;
- omab teadmisi metallide ja nende sulamite kristalsest ehitusest, faasidiagrammidest;
- omab ülevaadet põhilistest mitteraudmetallidest ja mitterauasulamitest;
- tunneb põhilisi mittemetalseid materjale, põhilisi materjalide katsetamise viise ja nende abil määratavaid omadusi;
- omab ülevaadet materjalide ja töötlemise põhiprotsessidest, seadmetest, tööriistadest, parameetritest: valu ja survetöötlemine, lõiketöötlemine, mittetraditsioonilised töötlemismeetodid, keevitamine, pulbermetallurgia ning oskab rakendada teadmisi lihtsamate toodete materjali- ja tehnoloogiavalikul.

Student:
- describes electrical and magnetic properties of substance from the point of view of atomic structure and bonding;
- describes classification of materials on the basis of electrical and magnetic properties;
- describes types of polarization in dielectrics;
- describes conduction in insulating materials and influence of different factors to materials conductivity.;
- calculates on the basis of laboratory measurements dielectric constant and conductivity;
- Student describes dielectric losses and principles of loss calculation;
- calculates on the basis of laboratory measurements loss tangent;
- describes breakdown and dielectric strength of dielectrics;
- describes electric conduction mechanism in semiconductors and influence of donors to conduction type;
- describes electric conduction mechanism in conductors and influence of impurities and thermal or mechanical treatment to conductivity;
- describes properties of high conductivity metals and high resistivity alloys;
- describes properties of magnetic materials in magnetic field.

Aine ehitus, materjalide klassifikatsioon. Gaasilised, vedelad ja tahked isoleermaterjalid, nende kasutamine. Pooljuhid. Elektrijuhid. Magnetmaterjalid. Metallmaterjalid. Metallide ja sulamite struktuur, mehaanilised omadused. Mittemetallmaterjalid. Plastikud, tehnokeraamika, komposiitmaterjalid. Materjalide mehaanilised omadused ja katsetamine. Purustav katsetamine: tugevus-, plastsus-, sitkusnäitajad. Katsediagrammid, teljestikud, ühikud. Kõvadusnäitajad, Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, Barcol. Tähised, ühikud. Tehnoloogiaprotsessid. Valutehnoloogia, valandite tootmine kordkasutusega ja korduvkasutusega valuvormides. Survetöötlemine: külm- ja kuumsurvetöötlus, valtsmetalli sortiment. Keevitamine, keevitatavus, kaarkeevituse protsessid, jootmine. Lõiketöötlemine, põhimeetodid, lõikeriistad ja -pingid, mittetraditsioonilised töötlusmeetodid.

Composition of matter and classification. Insulating materials: polarization, electrical conduction, dielectric losses, and overview of breakdown in gases, fluids and solids. Thermal and mechanical properties of insulating materials. Gaseous, liquid and solid materials and their use. Semiconductors: chemical elements and compounds. The mechanical properties of materials and testing. Destructive tests: strength, plasticity-, toughness. Test diagrams, marking, units. Hardness, Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, Barcol. Marking and units. Supplements in semiconductors and their influence to conducting behavior. Conductors: conductivity. Conductor materials and their use. Magnetic materials: magnetization process and losses. Soft and hard magnetic materials. Permanent magnets and their use.

Eksami eelduseks on laboratoorsete tööde (4 tööd) sooritamine ja edukas kaitsmine. Eksam on kirjalik, kestusega 2 tundi. Eksamipiletis on kuni 10 küsimust.

During the semester there are four laboratory works, positive performance of theirs give the access to examination. Examination consists of up to 10 theoretical questions. The examination is written and lasts 2 hours.
