VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
course aims in English
The purpose of this course is to give the basis for an engineer to design and manage hydraulic systems. During the course student will gain necessary knowledge and capability to orientate in the field of classical mechanics that deals with statics and dynamics of fluids. Solving real problems linked with technical systems will develop creative thinking that is useful for a future engineer.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- valdab hüdraulikaalast terminoloogiat, põhiühikuid ja -mõisteid;
- rakendab hüdrostaatika põhivõrrandit ja arvutab vedelike poolt tekitatavaid jõudusid ehitisele ning mahutile;
- eristab vedeliku voolamise režiime ja survekadude tüüpe ning seostab voolamisega seotud protsesse nii surve- kui ka isevoolsetes süsteemides;
- rakendab hüdrodünaamika põhivalemeid torustike ja kanalite dimensioneerimisel, kavandamisel ning analüüsil;
- määrab pumpade ja ventilaatorite tööpunkte ning -parameetreid eri töörežiimide ja ühenduste (rööp, jada, koos reservuaaridega) korral;
- eristab erinevaid pumba tüüpe ja valib süsteemi sobiva pumba.

After completing this course the student:
- knows how to use correct terminology of hydraulics, main units and definitions;
- implements the hydrostatic equation and calculates static forces on constructions and tanks;
- distinguishes between the flow regimes and types of pressure losses and associates the flow processes in pressure and free surface flow systems;
- implements main equations of hydrodynamics to dimension, design and analyse flow in pipes and channels;
- determines duty points and work parameters of pumps and fans in case of different work regimes and operations (e.g. parallel and series operation);
- distinguishes between different pump types and knows how to select a proper pump for the system.
brief description of the course in Estonian
brief description of the course in English
The course is divided into four modules: hydrostatics, hydrodynamic in pressurized
and free surface flow systems and pumps. Main topics in the first module are
connected with hydrostatic pressure, static forces on surfaces and buoyancy,
Law of Archimedes. In Hydrodynamics in pressurized systems the main themes
are linked with Bernoulli equation and its applications, flow regimes, minor and
major losses and how to calculate them, water hammer in pipes and basis of
modelling. Third module deals with flow dynamics in case of free surface flow.
The main topics are linked with uniform and non-uniform flow in open channels,
optimum cross-section calculations, hydraulic jump, classification of weirs and
multiphase flow in technical systems. In pumps module the main topics are
classification of pumps, theory of centrifugal pumps, usage of centrifugal pumps
(connection with network, regulating the duty point), similarity of pumps and fans,
parallel and series operations, positive displacement pumps, energy efficient
regulating and automatization of pumps and fans. The topics will be connected
with practical problems that are solved during exercises and practices in the lab.
During the course students will solve a personal homework that is connected
with hydraulic calculations of a network and proper pump selection. Lectures are
supported by the test rigs for basic hydraulics, pumps and optimization of a water
network situated at the Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics. The lab is equipped with
state of the art measurement equipment that will be introduces to students during
the course.
type of assessment in Estonian
Kursuse lõpus toimub suuline eksam, mille osakaal koondhindest on 20%. Kursuse koondhinne kujuneb laboritööde (kokku kuni 40 punkti), iseseisvate teadmiste kontrolli testide (kokku kuni 15 punkti), kodutöö (kuni 25 punkti) ja suulise eksami (kuni 20 punkti) summana.
type of assessment in English
The course ends with an oral exam with a share of 20 % of the total grade. The overall score is the sum of lab assignments (total up to 40 points), individual tests (total up to 15 points), individual project (up to 25 points) and oral exam (up to 20 points).
