Ehitusmaterjalid on ühisnimetus mistahes looduslikele ja tehismaterjalidele, mida kasutatakse ehitusvaldkonnas – looduslikud ehitusmaterjalid, looduslikest materjalidest tuletatud materjalid ja keemilisel teel sünteesitud materjalid, mida kasutatakse kas eraldi või komposiitidena.
Ehituskeemia selgitab materjalide keemiliste koostisosade tähtsust, nende olulist rolli materjalide koospüsimisel või lagunemisel toetudes anorgaanilise ja orgaanilise keemia põhimõistele.

A construction material is a collective name for any natural and artificial material which is used in the building industry: natural building materials, materials derived from natural materials, chemically synthesized materials which are used either alone or in composites.
Construction chemistry reveals the importance of chemical ingredients in the holding together the materials structure, or vice versa decomposition of materials based on the basic concepts of inorganic and organic chemistry.

Kursuse läbinu üliõpilane:
- teab kuidas aine keemilised omadused võimendavad ehitusmaterjalide käitumist erinevates kasutusfunktsioonides ja keskkondades; kuidas materjalide püsivust ja konstruktiivseid omadusi mõjutavad nende enda keemilised omadused ning lisandid;
- saab aru ja oskab kasutada keemia põhitermineid ja seadusi eriala kontekstis vajalikus mahus;
- orienteerub regulatsioonides ja standardites, millega tagatakse ehitusmaterjalide ohutu kasutamine.

Having completed the course, students will gain knowledge in the field of construction chemistry and will:
- know how the chemical properties of material enhance the performance of building materials in different environments;
- understand how the persistence of materials and design characteristics affect their own properties and additives;
- understand and be able to use basic chemical terms and laws in the context of professional capacity requirements;
- be familiar with regulations and standards to ensure the safe use of building materials.

- Ainete ja materjalide keemilised ja füüsikalised omadused - keemiline, mineraalne, koostis, makro- meso- ja mikrostruktruur; hüdrofoobsus ja hüdrofiilsus; adsorptsioon, absorptsioon ja hügroskoopsus; veekindlus, läbitavus; termilised omadused; külmakindlus; vastupidavus.
- Elektrilised omadused. Sulamine ja kristallisatsioon. Lahused ja lahustuvus.
- Keemilised ja füüsikalised uurimismeetodid.
- Ehitusmaterjalid ja vesi – vaba vesi, keemiliselt seotud vesi. Difusioon. Kuivamine vs kuivatamine. Niiskuse mõõtmine.
- Erinevad ehitusmaterjalid. Kivimaterjalid – looduslik ja tehiskivi. Kips, poorbetoon. Puitpõhised materjalid. Termopuit. Taimsed materjalid. Puidukaitse. Polümeersed ja komposiitmaterjalid. Klaas. Keraamika. Bituumen.Vaigud, lakid, värvid, hermeetikud, liimid.
- Säilitus- ja konserveerivad ained. Hüdrofobiseerivad lisandid.
- Kulumiskindlad ja kaitsvad kattekihid – kaasaegsed lahendused. Nanotehnoloogia rakendused.
- Materjalidele esitatavad nõuded sise- ja välistingimustes kasutamiseks.
- Ohtlikud kemikaalid ehitusmaterjalides. Ehitusmaterjalid punane nimekiri. Keelatud ja lubatud ftalaadid materjalides. Ehitusmaterjalidest lenduvad orgaanilised ühendid (VOC). Uued standardid. Ehitusmaterjalide emissiooniklassid. Keskkonnamärgised.

- Chemical and physical properties of substances and materials, - chemical, mineral ingredients, meso-, macro- and microstructure; hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity; adsorption, absorption and hygroscopicity; resistance, permeability; thermal properties; frost resistance; durability.
- Electrical properties. Melting and crystallization. Solutions and solubility.
- Chemical and physical research method.
- Building and water - free water, chemically bound water. Diffusion. Drying. Moisture measurement.
- Building materials. Stone materials - natural and artificial stone. Plaster, porous concrete. Wood based materials. Thermally treated wood. Plant materials. Wood preservatives. Polymeric and composite materials. Glass. Pottery. Bitumen, varnishes, paints, sealants, adhesives.
- Preservation and preservatives. Hydrophobic additives.
- Wear-resistant and protective coatings - current solutions. Nanotechnology applications.
- Requirements for materials for indoor and outdoor use.
- Dangerous chemicals in building materials. Red List building materials. Banned and permitted phthalates in materials. Construction materials and volatile organic compounds (VOC). New standards. Emission classes for building materials. Environmental labels.
