course aims in Estonian
Õppeaine eesmärk on:
- tutvustada geoloogilise mineviku uurimise meetodeid;
- anda ülevaade Maa ja elu arenguloo peamistest etappidest, asetleidnud sündmustest ning protsessidest ja nende omavahelistest seostest;
- anda üldteadmised paleontoloogiast ja oskused peamiste fossiilirühmade eristamiseks.
course aims in English
The aim of this course is to:
- introduce methods for the study of geological history;
- provide an overview of the main stages in the development of Earth and life, significant events, processes, and their interrelationships;
- offer general knowledge of paleontology and skills for distinguishing major fossil groups.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- orienteerub geoloogilises ajaskaalas, tunneb stratigraafilist terminoloogiat ja vanuse määramise meetodeid;
- tunneb geoloogilise mineviku uurimise võimalusi ja meetodeid;
- kirjeldab Maa geoloogilise arenguloo põhietappe ja sündmusi, minevikus valitsenud keskkonnatingimusi ning paleogeograafiat;
- iseloomustab eluslooduse evolutsiooni ja elurikkuse arengut läbi geoloogilise aja;
- eristab peamisi selgrootute kivistisi ja hindab nende praktilist väärtust.
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After completing this course, the student:
- has a grasp of the geological timescale, is familiar with stratigraphic terminology, and understands methods for determining the age of geological materials;
- understands the possibilities and methods for studying geological history;
- describes the key stages in Earth's geological development, significant events, past environmental conditions, and paleogeography;
- characterizes the evolution of life and the development of biodiversity throughout geological time;
- distinguishes major invertebrate fossils and assesses their practical value.
brief description of the course in Estonian
brief description of the course in English
Geological time and dating methods, geochronological scale and principles of stratigraphy. Formation and early evolution of Earth in Hadean and Archean; emergence of life, start of plate tectonics, composition of atmosphere and hydrosphere and the Great Oxygenation Event in Preterozoic; Precambrian ice ages and "snowball Earth"; appearance of multicellular life. Principles of paleontology. Phanerozoic as the eon of life: paleogeography, climate, and evolution of life through the periods; main geological events and their impact on life and environments. Last millions of years on Earth and the present day; using the past as a key to understand the future.
