VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
Õppeaine eesmärk on anda baasteadmised setete moodustumisest, transpordist ja kuhjumisest erinevates keskkondades; selgitada setete diageneesi (kivistumise) protsesse; tutvustada settekivimeid, nende koostist, omadusi ja uurimismeetodeid; anda praktilised oskused setteliste läbilõigete kirjeldamiseks ja interpreteerimiseks; tutvustada stratigraafia põhiprintsiipe, settekivimite liigendamise, korrelatsiooni ja dateerimise meetodeid ning settebasseinide analüüsi; anda ülevaade sedimentoloogia ja stratigraafia rakenduslikest aspektidest.
course aims in English
The aim of this course is to provide basic understanding on the formation, transport and deposition of sediments in different sedimentary environments and settings; explain processes of lithification and diagenesis; introduce different types of sedimentary rocks, their composition and properties; provide overview of methods for studying sedimentary rocks; give practical skills and experiences for describing and interpreting sedimentary successions; introduce main principles of stratigraphy and methods for classifying, dating and correlating sedimentary rocks; provide overview of applied aspects of sedimentology and stratigraphy.
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- kirjeldab setete moodustumise, transpordi ja kuhjumise ja mattumisega seotud geoloogilisi protsesse;
- iseloomustab erinevad tänapäeva merelisi ja maismaalisi settekeskkondi ja neis tekkivaid setteid;
- eristab enamlevinud setteid ja settekivimeid, tunneb nende omadusi, struktuure ja tekstuure ning mõistab nende tekkemehhanisme;
- kasutab erinevaid settekivimite uurimismeetodeid;
- tunneb stratigraafia põhiprintsiipide, teab milliste tunnuste abil setete ja settekivimite läbilõikeid liigestada ning korreleerida ja dateerida;
- kirjeldab sedimentoloogia ja stratigraafia praktilisi väljundeid ning toob asjakohaseid näiteid.
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
After completing this course, the student:
- describes geological processes related to the formation, transportation, deposition, and burial of sediments;
- characterizes various contemporary marine and terrestrial sedimentary environments and the sediments that develop within them;
- distinguishes common sediments and sedimentary rocks, recognizes their properties, structures, textures, and understands the mechanisms of their formation;
- utilizes various methods for the investigation of sedimentary rocks;
- understands the fundamental principles of stratigraphy, knows how to correlate and date sedimentary rock sequences using specific characteristics;
- describes practical applications of sedimentology and stratigraphy and provides relevant examples.
