course aims in Estonian
Õppeaine eesmärk on:
- saada aru geofüüsika põhiprintsiipidest ning nende rollist geoteadustes, eelkõige maakoore struktuuri uuringutel, naftamaardlate, mineraalsete maavarade ja veevarude uuringutel ning inseneerias;
- omandada üldjoones teadmised kõigi geofüüsikaliste meetodite kohta, k.a kuival maal, merel, õhus ja puuraukudes tehtavad uuringud;
- õppida tundma füüsikalisi omadusi, mida mõõdetakse geofüüsikaliste meetoditega (nt tihedus, poorsus, magnetilised, akustilised, elektrilised ja termaalsed omadused);
- olla teadlik erinevatest geofüüsikalistest meetoditest (gravimeetria, magnetomeetria, elektrilised, elektromagnetilised, seismilised ja radioaktiivsuse uuringud, georadar);
- saada aru geofüüsikalistest väljatest, nende mõõtmise metoodikast ja andmete tõlgendusest.
course aims in English
The aim of this course is to:
- understand of the main principles of geophysics and its role in the Earth Sciences, especially in structural studies of Earth´s crust, application for oil and gas prospecting, mineral and water exploration and civil engineering;
- acquire an overview of all geophysical methods including land, marine, airborne and borehole geophysics;
- familiarize oneself with physical properties measured by different geophysical methods (e.g. density, porosity, magnetic, acoustic, electric and thermal properties);
- be aware of such geophysical methods as gravity, magnetic, electric, electromagnetic, seismic, radioactivity and ground penetrating radar;
- have an understanding of geophysical fields, methods of their measurements and data interpretation.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- tunneb seosed materjalide füüsikaliste omaduste ja geofüüsikaliste uuringumeetodite vahel;
- mõistab üldjoones magneetiliste, gravimeeriliste, elektriliste, elektromagnetiliste, radioaktiivsete ja seismiliste uuringute sisu ning suudab hinnata eri meetodite tugevusi ja nõrkusi;
- valdab geofüüsikaliste andmete tõlgendamise põhimõtted;
- oskab pakkuda otstarbekaid geofüüsikalisi meetodeid eri rakenduste jaoks (maakoore struktuuri tõlgendamine, naftamaardlate, mineraalmaavarade ja veevarude uuring ning inseneeria);
- on harjutanud mõnede geofüüsikaliste meetodite rakendamist ja geofüüsikaliste andmete tõlgendamist näidiste põhjal.

After completing this course, the student:
- knows the connection between the physical properties of materials and geophysical study methods;
- understands the outlines of magnetic, gravity, electrical, electromagnetic, radioactivity and seismic methods, and can assess the strengths and weaknesses of various methods;
- masters the principles of interpretation of geophysical data;
- is capable of choosing valid geophysical methods for various applications (interpretation of the structure of Earth’s crust, oil and gas prospecting, mineral and water exploration and civil engineering);
- has practiced applying some geophysical techniques and interpreting geophysical data examples.
