The course aims at providing the students with an introduction to the molecular mechanisms which are the foundations of biological processes in cells.

Üliõpilane tunneb põhilisi molekulaarbioloogilisi protsesse ja seoseid, sh:
- teab biomolekulide struktuuri;
- teab erinevaid geeniregulatsiooni tasandeid ja omavahelisi seoseid;
- tunneb rakkude struktuuri, rakkude põhiomadusi;
- oskab omandatud teadmisi kasutada järgnevates ainekursustes;
- kasutab korrektselt terminoloogiat.

After completing this course the student khows the basic bilogical processes of the cell and the underlying molecular mechanisms, including:
- knows the structure of biomolecules;
- understands different levels of gene regulation and interrelationships;
- knows cell structure, basic properties;
- is able to use the acquired knowledge and skills in other disciplines;
- is able to use the correct terminology.

Sissejuhatus: keemilised sidemed, valkude struktuur ja analüüsi meetodid, bioloogilised membraanid, nukleiinhapete struktuur, geenid ja kromosoomid, korduselemendid.
Molekulaarbioloogia: replikatsioon, transkriptsioon, transkriptsioon, RNA protsessimine, valkude biosüntees, valkude sorteerimine, signaaliülekanne,
Rakubioloogia üldosa: organellid, rakutsükkel, rakkude liikumine ja kuju: mikrotuubulid ja mikrofilamendid, rakkude diferentseerumine, rakkudevahelised interaktsioonid arengus, tüvirakud, rakkudevaheline adhesioon ja ekstratsellulaarne maatriks, raku surm (apoptoos).

Introduction: chemical bonds, protein composition and structure, biological membranes, nucleic acid composition and structure. Molecular Biology: genes and chromosomes, repeat and transposable elements, replication, transcription, RNA processing, protein biosynthesis, protein sorting, signal transduction, Cell biology: organelles, cell cycle, cell movement and shape, microtubules and microfilaments, cell differentiation, cell-to-cell interactions in development, stem cells, cell-cell adhesion and extracellular matrix, cell death (apoptosis).
