Anda üldine sissejuhatus molekulaarbioloogias ning geenitehnoloogias kasutavatest meetoditest ja uuritavatest probleemidest. Aine on käsitletav kui "Sissejuhatus erialasse" (Keemia, geeni- ja toidutehnoloogia tudengitele), võimaldamaks neil soovi korral spetsialiseeruda geenitehnoloogia peaerialale).

Provide students with the general introduction to the methods and problems in molecular biology and gene technology. The subject can be characterized as "Introduction to the speciality" for chemistry, food and gene technology students willing to specialize to the main speciality _Gene technology_.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- loetleb ja kirjeldab geenitehnoloogilisis rakendusi;
- mõistab ja eristab olulisi põhimõtteid ja fakte geenitehnoloogias, molekulaar- ja rakubioloogias, mikrobioloogias ja teiste geenitehnoloogiaga seotud valdkondades;
- rakendab saadud teadmisi iseseisva kirjaliku ettekande koostamisek;
- tunneb ära erinevat geenitehnoloogia teadussuunad ja nendega seotud töögrupid TalTechis.

After completing this course the student:
- knows and can describe different applications in gene technology;
- understands and differentiates basics and facts in gene technology, molecular and cell biology, microbiology and in other related fields;
- knows how to apply this knowledge independently into reports;
- knows and orientates in different gene technology research directions and related workgroups in Taltech.

Anda üldine sissejuhatus geenitehnoloogias kasutavatest meetoditest ja uuritavatest probleemidest. Aine on käsitletav kui "Sissejuhatus erialasse" (Keemia, geeni- ja toidutehnoloogia tudengitele), võimaldamaks neil soovi korral spetsialiseeruda geenitehnoloogia peaerialale). Aines räägitakse:
i) geenitehnoloogia ajaloost;
ii) geenidest, geneetikast ja genoomikast;
iii) molekulaar- ja rakubioloogia põhimõistetest;
iv) biokeemiast;
v) viroloogiast ja mikrobioloogiast;
vi) üldistest laboratoorsetest meetoditest ja transgeensetest organismidest

Lisaks tutvustatakse instituudis olevaid töögruppe ja nende tegemisi.

The course introduces:
i) history of gene technology;
ii) genes, genomes and genomics;
iii) basic terms in molecular and cellular biology;
iv) biochemistry;
v) virology and microbiology;
vi) general laboratory methods and transgenetic technology.

In addition, introduction is given about the different workgroups in the institute and their projects.
