Aine eesmärk on:
- süvendada üliõpilaste teadmisi kõige olulisemate mikro- ja makroökonoomika teoreetiliste mudelite kohta;
- aidata üliõpilastel mõista seoseid teoreetilise ja empiirilise teadustöö vahel;
- anda üliõpilastele piisavad teadmised iseseisvaks teadustööks rakendusliku mikro- ja makroökonoomika valdkondades;
- süvendada üliõpilaste mõtlemis- ja analüüsioskust.

The aim of this course is to:
- familiarise the students with the most important theoretical models in microeconomics and macroeconomics;
- help the students understand the links between theoretical and empirical research;
- give the students a thorough background for independent research in applied microeconomics and macroeconomics;
- help the students develop their thinking and analysing skills in economics.

Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- on omandanud süvendatud arusaamise mikro- ja makroökonoomika võtmeküsimustest;
- valdab matemaatilisi meetodeid, mida mikro- ja makroökonoomika teoreetilistes mudelites kasutatakse;
- loeb kriitiliselt “eesliini” teadusuuringuid majandusteaduse valdkonnas, sh artikleid nüüdisaaegse majandusteooria ja sellel põhinevate empiiriliste uuringute kohta;
- seostab teoreetilisi mudeleid tegelike majandusarengutega ja saab aru, kuidas majandusteooriat saab praktikas rakendada majandusprotsesside mõistmisel.

After completing this course the student:
- has an advanced understanding of key principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics;
- has a good command of mathematical methods used in theoretical models in microeconomics and macroeconomics;
- understands research papers at the frontier in economics, including empirical papers building on modern economic theory;
- is able to link theoretical models in economics with contemporary economic developments and understands how economic theory can be used to deepen the understanding of such developments.

Õppeaines käsitletkse mikroökonoomika võtmeteemasid (sh konkurentsiturud; heaoluteoreemid; avalikud kaubad, välismõjud, mänguteooria põhimõtted; informatsioon; vastupidine valik; otsustusmehhanismi mõjurid ja printsiibid; oksjon; kahepoolne kaubandus ja spekulatsioon). Samuti käsitletakse makroökonoomika võtmeteemasid (sh eksogeense ja endogeense majanduskasvu mudelid, kattuvate põlvkondade (OLG) mudelid, äritsüklite teooriad, tarbimine, investeeringud, töötus, inflatsioon, fiskaalpoliitika).

The course addresses key issues in microeconomics, including competitive markets, welfare theorems, public goods, externalities, basics of game theory, information, adverse selection, incentives and principles of mechanism design, auction design, bilateral trading, and speculation. It also addresses key issues in macroeconomics, including exogenous and endogenous growth models, overlapping generation models, theories of business cycles; , consumption, investment, unemployment, inflation , and fiscal policy.
