Aine eesmärk on:
- tutvustada kvalitatiivsete meetodite olemust ja kasutamise loogikat uurimuse spetsiifikaga määratletud teoreetilis-metodoloogiliste lähenemiste kontekstis;
- tutvustada erinevaid kvalitatiivseid meetodeid, analüütilisi kontekste ja distsipliinideüleseid rakendusvõimalusi;
- anda süvendatud teadmisi ja oskusi andmekogumise tehnikate kasutamiseks ning kvalitatiivsete andmete analüüsimiseks uurimistöös.

The aim of this course is to:
- introduce the nature and logic of qualitative methods in the context of theoretical and methodological approaches defined by the specificity of a research;
- introduce different qualitative methods, analytical frameworks and cross-disciplinary scales of the application of qualitative methods;
- provide profound knowledge and skills for applying techniques of data generation and data analysis in a qualitative research.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
1) kirjeldab, eristab ja rakendab erinevaid kvalitatiivseid uurimismeetodeid;
2) selgitab ja hindab erinevate meetodite rakendatavust uurimisküsimuste ning teadusfilosoofia laiemas kontekstis;
3) kavandab kvalitatiivse uurimisprojekti, kasutades sobivaid andmete kogumise ja analüüsi meetodeid, mis on rakendatavad nende endi uurimisprojekti puhul;
4) hindab kriitiliselt uurimiseesmärkide, uurimisfilosoofia, teooria ja kvalitatiivsete meetodite sobivust erinevate uurimisprojektide puhul.

After completing this course the student:
1) described, differentiated and applies a variety of qualitative methods;
2) explain and evaluates the applicability of different methods in the context of research questions and wider scale of the philosophy of science;
3) designs a qualitative research study with appropriate methods of data collection and analysis, applicable to their own project;
4) critically assesses the fit between research objectives, research philosophy, theory, and qualitative methods for individual research projects.

Kvalitatiivsed meetodid ja teadusfilosoofilised lähtekohad: ontoloogia ja epistemoloogia, positivistlikud ja interpretatiivsed lähenemised, distsipliinideülene kasutusloogika; kvalitatiivsete ja kvantitatiivsete meetodite erinevusest ja ühitamisest. Analüütilised raamistikud: narratiivne uurimus, etnograafiline uurimus, (konstruktivistlik) põhistatud teooria, juhtumiuuring, fenomenoloogiline uurimus, tegevusuuring, diskursusanalüüs, sh kriitiline diskursusanalüüs jt. Andmete genereerimine: intervjuu, rühmaintervjuud, sh fookusgrupi intervjuu, vaatlus, visuaalne analüüs jt. Kvalitatiivsete andmete analüüs; argumentatsiooni kvaliteet. Valim, esinduslikkus, kehtivus, usaldusväärsus. Värbamine. Eetika küsimused.

Qualitative methods and the perspectives of the philosophy of science: ontology and epistemology, positivist and interpretative approaches, the logic of cross-disciplinary applications; the distinctness of qualitative and quantitative methods, triangulation. Analytical frameworks: narrative study, ethnographic study, (constructivist) grounded theory, case study, phenomenological research, action research, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis etc. Data generation: interview, group interview, incl. focus group interview, observation, visual analysis etc. Analysing qualitative data; quality of argumentation. Sample, representativeness, validity, reliability. Recruitment. Research ethics.
