Õppeaine üldeesmärgid on:
- arendada kriitilise arutlemise oskust;
- õpetada argumentatsiooni ja teadusliku metodoloogia aluseid;
- anda ülevaade poliitilise filosoofia ajaloost ja põhiteemadest;
- selgitada filosoofilise analüüsi võimalusi poliitiliste praktikate käsitlemisel;
- arendada filosoofilise teksti lugemise ja mõistmise võimet;
- tutvustada suuremaid moraaliteooriad ja nende rakendumist poliitilises sfääris.

The general objectives of the subject are:
- to develop the skill of critical reasoning;
- to teach students the essentials of argumentation and scientific methodology;
- to give an overview of the history and main topics of political philosophy;
- to explain the possibilities of a philosophical analysis for conceptualizing political practices;
- to develop the capacity of reading and understanding a philosophical text;
- to introduce main ethical theories and their application in political context.

Õppeaine edukalt läbinud üliõpilane:
- suudab arutleda ning oma aluseeldusi ning järeldusi kriitiliselt hinnata;
- suudab ära tunda teise argumente ja hinnata nende tugevusi, vigu, ebakõlasid, eelarvamusi ja suudab eristada faktilist erimeelsust puhtalt verbaalsest;
- omab sissejuhatavat ülevaadet olulisematest poliitilise filosoofia teemadest;
- suudab poliitilise filosoofia probleeme seostada ühiskonna praktiliste probleemidega;
- hoomab moraali printsiipe ja nende rakendumist poliitilises sfääris;
- on võimeline lugema ja mõistma (nii kaasaegset kui ka klassikalist) filosoofilist teksti.

After successfully passing the subject the student:
- is capable of reasoning and critically assessing his/her premises and conclusions;
- is able to recognize the arguments that others make and evaluate their strengths, errors, fallacies, inconsistencies, biases and can distinguish factual from merely verbal disagreements;
- has acquired an overview of the most important topics of political philosophy;
- can connect the problems of political philosophy with the practical problems of society;
- comprehends ethical principles with application to problems in political context;
- is capable of reading and understanding a philosophical text (both contemporary and classical.

Kursuse käigus toimuvad loengud, kus juhatatakse sisse vastavasse alateemasse, ning nendega otseselt haakuvad seminarid, kus arutletakse vastava teemaga haakuvaid tekste. Kursus on jaotatud kolme ossa. Esimene osa on pühendatud argumentatsioonile ja kriitilisele mõtlemisele. Üliõpilased õpivad konstrueerima tugevaid argumente ja hindama teiste argumentide tugevust. Kursuse teises osas tulevad käsitlemisele poliitilise filosoofia klassikalised teemad ning nende kaasaegsed edasi arendused. Teemade hulka kuuluvad: poliitilise filosoofia roll poliitika mõtestamisel ning tema eripära võrreldes teiste filosoofia harudega; poliitilise võimu, vabaduse ning õiguse probleem; demokraatia idee ja sellega seonduvad teoreetilised ning praktilised raskused. Kolmandas osas käsitletakse eetikat. Vaatluse alla võetakse suurimad moraaliteooriad ja nende rakendumine poliitilises kontekstis.
brief description of the course in English
During the course, lectures are given introducing the concrete sub-topics and seminars that deal with the relevant texts. The course is organized in three main parts: first part is devoted to arguments and critical thinking. Students are expected to learn how to construct strong arguments and evaluate the strength of the arguments they face. In the second part, the classical themes of political philosophy and their contemporary developments are covered. The sub-subjects include: the role of political philosophy in conceptualizing politics and its specificity compared to other branches of philosophy; the problems of political power, liberty and justice; the idea of democracy and the theoretical and practical difficulties concerning it. In the third part of the course is devoted to ethics. The course overviews the main theories in ethics, then discusses applications in political context.

Õpilastel tuleb kirjutada lühiessee, milles nad demonstreerivad poliitika filosoofia teemade tundmist ja allikate kasutamise oskust.
Lisaks tuleb igaks seminariks iseseisvalt läbi töötada vastavad seminaritekstid.

Students will have to write short essay where they will have to show their knowledge of themes of political philosophy.
Additionally students will have to read prepare for seminars by working with seminar texts.
