Õppeaine eesmärk on:
- süvendada globaalsest kliimasüsteemist arusaamist atmosfääri- ja merefüüsikale spetsialiseeruvatel tudengitel;
- pakkuda matemaatilisel formalismil ja füüsikaseadustel põhinevat käsitlust kliima ja kliimamuutuste probleemide kirjeldamisel;
- laiendada tudengi teadmisi kliima arengust geoloogilistes ajaskaalades;
- juhatada tudeng sisse kliima modelleerimise põhimõtetesse.

The aim of this course is to:
- deepen the understanding of the global climate system for students specialising in atmospheric physics and oceanography;
- offer an approach for climate and climate change problem description which is based on mathematical formalism and physics equations;
- widen the knowledge of climate evolution in geological timescales;
- introduce the principles of climate modelling.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- näeb seoseid füüsikaseaduste ja kliimasüsteemi toimimise põhimõtete vahel;
- valdab kliimasüsteemi erinevate komponentide ja protsesside matemaatilise kirjeldamise meetodeid;
- saab aru kliima modelleerimise olulisematest lähenemistest ja meetoditest;
- koostab erinevate kliimasüsteemi komponentide bilansivõrrandeid;
- suhtestab kaasajal esinevaid kliimaparameetrite väärtuseid kliima arengu kontekstiga geoloogilistes ajaskaalades;
- hindab erinevate füüsikaliste protsesside mõju kliimasüsteemi tundlikkusele;
- analüüsib kliimamuutuste kohta käivate väidete (nagu inimtekkelisus, looduslik muutlikkus) paikapidavust ja vastavust loodusseadustele.

After completing this course, the student:
- sees the connections between the laws of physics and the principles of the functioning of the climate system;
- knows the methods of mathematical description of various components and processes of the climate system;
- understands the most important approaches and methods of climate modeling;
- prepares balance equations for various climate system components;
- compares the values of climate parameters present in modern times with the context of climate evolution in geological time scales;
- evaluates the impact of various physical processes on the sensitivity of the climate system;
- analyzes the validity of claims about climate change (such as anthropogenic impact, natural variability) and their compliance with natural laws.

Kursusel käsitletavad teemad on: ilm ja kliima; kliima kirjeldamine ja kliimavöötmed; kliima kui globaalne süsteem; globaalne energiabilanss; energiabilanss aluspinnal; veeringe; atmosfääri ja ookeani üldine tsirkulatsioon; looduslik kliima varieeruvus; paleokliima eri tasanditel ja ajaskaalades Maa ajaloos; kliima jääaegadel ja jäävaheaegadel; kliima tundlikkus ja tagasiside mehhanismid; kliima mudelid; kliimamuutused ja inimene; kliima projektsioonid; kliimamuutuste mõju ja nendega kohanemine.

The subjects in course are: weather and climate, description of climate and climate regions, climate as a global system, global energy balance, surface energy balance, water cycle, global circulation of atmosphere and ocean, natural variability, paleoclimate at different age scales, climate in ice ages and interstadials, sensitivity and feedback mechanisms of climate, climate models, anthropogenic climate change, climate projections, impact of climate change and adaptation strategies.
