course aims in Estonian
Õppeaine eesmärk on:
- anda ülevaade olelusringi hindamise ajaloost, metoodika raamistikust ja põhiprintsiipidest;
- selgitada seoseid olelusringi hindamise ja teiste keskkonnajuhtimisvahendite vahel;
- arendada üliõpilase tootesüsteemide analüüsi oskusi,
- kinnistada olelusringi mõtteviisi;
- tutvustada erialast teadusajakirjandust.

The aim of this course is to:
- give an overview of framework and principles of Life Cycle Assessment methodology;
- explain the Interrelations between Life Cycle Assessment and other environmental management tools;
- develop the skills for analysis of industrial product systems;
- develop the skills of analysing the scientific publications;
- support the development of general Life Cycle Thinking concept;
- introduce scientific literature of LCA.

Aine läbinud üliõpilane:
- oskab kirjeldada olelusringi hindamise metoodikat ja selle kasutusvõimalusi;
- teab metoodika arendamise ajalugu;
- suudab visandada tootesüsteemide skeeme;
- omab praktilist kogemust toote olelusringi kaardistamisel;
- omab erialaste teaduslike artiklite analüüsikogemust;
- oskab esitada auditooriumile oma iseseisva töö tulemusi;
- oskab rakendada teadmisi keskkonnakaitseliste, majanduslike ja tehnoloogiliste aspektide integreerimiseks probleemide analüüsil;
- oskab analüüsida tööstuslike ja keskkonnaprotsesside vahelisi seoseid.

The student:
- understands and is able to describe the methods of LCA and its applications;
- knows the history of development of LCA methodology;
- is able to block out the schemes of product systems;
- has practical skills for mapping of product life cycle;
- acquires the competency in analysis of scientific articles of LCA;
- is able to present the results of own work to audience;
- is able to implement the knowledge by integration of environmental, economical and technological aspects in analysis of problems;
- is able to analyze the relationships between industrial and environmental processes.

Loengute käigus antakse ülevaade olelusringi hindamise metodoloogilisest raamistikust, põhimõistetest, eelistest ja puudustest ning ISO 14040 seeria standarditest olelusringi hindamise kohta.
Tutvustatakse meetodi arendamise ajalugu ja selle kujunemist. Selgitatakse miks ja kuidas toote olelusringi hinnata, õpetatakse kõiki hindamise etappe – eesmärgi ja käsitlusala seadmist, inventuuranalüüsi, mõju hindamist ning tulemuste tõlgendamist. Praktilise tööna viiakse läbi arvutusülesanne ning hüpoteetiline toote olelusringi hindamine programmi abil.
Iseseisva tööna koostatakse vabalt valitud tootele vooskeem, kirjeldatakse selle sisendeid ja väljundeid ning esitletakse seda tunnis.

Overview of Life Cycle Assessment methodological framework, main concepts, benefits and limitations of its applications and ISO 14040 stqandard series on LCA.
Brief history of methodological development. Explanation why and how use LCA, how to caryy out all the stages of LCA – Goal and Scope Definition, Inventory Analysis, Impact Assessment and Intrepretation of Results. Discussions. As a practical exercise, calculation assignement is carried through, also hypothetical product life cycle assessment using software.
As an individual assignement: the modelling of one product system, with explanation about the inputs and outputs. Presentation of the product system in seminar.
