Õppeaine eesmärgiks on käsitleda teaduse olemust ja ülesandeid ning arendada majandusteadusliku uurimistöö tegemiseks vajalikke oskusi. Sealhulgas õppida tundma akadeemilise kirjutamise aluseid, uurimistöö protsessi, teadustöö metodoloogiat ja eetikat ning omandada oskusi üliõpilaste uurimistöödele esitatavate sisuliste ja vormistuslikke nõuete täitmiseks.

The aim of the course is to introduce the essence and aims of scientific approach and research and develop the skills for conducting individual research project in economics. The course provides the foundations of academic writing, research process, research methodology and ethics. The knowledge and practical skills in formulating the research problem, applying appropriate research methodology and presenting the research results in a clear, concise and correct manner.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilasel:
- saab aru teaduse olemusest ja ülesannetest;
- teab teadusliku lähenemise ja akadeemilise kirjutamise aluseid, teaduse metodoloogia ja eetika põhilisi lähtekohti;
- oskab määratleda teaduskirjandust ning hinnata kriitiliselt andmeallikaid;
- suudab leida teemakohast majandusteaduslikku kirjandust, juhindub uurimistöö kirjutamisel uurimistöö protsessist ning järgib uurimistööle esitatavaid sisulisi ja vormistuslikke nõudeid;
- oskab uurimistulemusi argumenteeritult esitleda.

After completing the course, a student:
- has an understanding on the nature, aims and tasks of scientific research;
- knows the core principles of academic writing, research methodology and research ethics;
- can make a distinction between the academic literature and non-academic literature, search and identify the academic literature related with their subject area;
- is aware of the steps and the process of writing a research project and knows the requirements on the content and format of a research project and is able to pursue these requirements in compiling his/her individual research project;
- is able to present and defend the results of his/her research.

Teaduse olemus ja ülesanded. Akadeemiline kirjutamine ja teaduskeel. Teaduskirjandus ja andmeallikad. Teaduse metodoloogia ja eetika. Teadusliku teooria olemus. Uurimistöö protsess ja etapid. Uurimistööle esitatavad sisulised ja vormistuslikud nõuded.

The essence and tasks of scientific approach and economic research. Academic writing and the use of language. Literature review and the use of recognized sources for economic research. Foundations of research methodology. The research process and ethics. The requirements on the content, structure and formatting of the research project.

Lõpphinde kujunemine on järgmine: 1. kodutöö – 5%, 2. kodutöö – 5%, 3. kodutöö – 5%, kontrolltöö – 30%, uurimistöö – 50%, kaasüliõpilase uurimistöö oponeerimine – 5%.

Õppeaine loetakse positiivselt sooritatuks, kui üliõpilane on tervikuna kogunud vähemalt 51 punkti. Positiivse hinde saamiseks peavad üliõpilasel olema täidetud hindamisele pääsemise eeldused. Kui hindamisele pääsemise eeldused ei ole täidetud, on õppeaine lõpptulemuseks „mitteilmunud“ (MI).

The final grade is composed of the following: 1st home assignment – 5%, 2nd home assignment – 5%, 3rd home assignment – 5%, test – 30%, research paper – 50%, critical review – 5%.

The student has passed the course if they have received at least 51% of the maximum score. In order to get to final evaluation the student has to fill the preconditions. If the student does not fill the preconditions, then the final result of the course will be “not attended” (“MI”).

Loengute ja harjutustundide materjali läbitöötamine; kodutööde kirjutamine, uurimistöö kirjutamine, sh uurimistöö-teemaliste teadusartiklite lugemine, andmete otsimine, ökonomeetrilise analüüsi läbiviimine jne; uurimistöö kaitsmiseks valmistumine; kaasüliõpilase uurimistöö oponeerimine.

Studying material of lectures and seminars; writing home assignments, writing a research paper including reading relevant academic papers, searching for data, carrying out econometric analysis etc; preparing for the defence of the research paper, reviewing/feedbacking another student’s research paper.
