Anda üliõpilastele üldteadmised inseneriteadusest ja -praktikast vastavalt kõrgharidusstandardile ning erialaõppeks vajalikud teadmised laevaehituses ja mehhanismides kasutatavatest materjalidest, nende omadustest ja erinevatest töötlemistehnoloogiatest.

To provide students with general knowledge of materials engineering science, included ship building, and practice according to higher education standards, and the necessary expertise in the industrially used materials and the different processing technologies.

Üliõpilane:
• teab metallide ja sulamite sisestruktuure, liigitamise aluseid, omadusi, oskab määrata nende mehaanilisi parameetreid;
• oskab materjalide omadusi ja olemasolevaid võimalusi arvestades valida detailide valmistamiseks ja remontimiseks sobivaid töötlemisviise, sh laevaehituses;
• oskab valida korrosioonitõrje meetodeid;
• teab ja oskab valida teatmematerjalide põhjal ja etteantud tingimuste alusel metalseid ja mittemetalseid materjale;
• tunneb termilise töötlemise erimeetodite füüsikalisi aluseid ja praktilise kasutamise võimalusi;
• oskab valida termotöötlemise ja keevitamise meetodeid ning režiime;
• omab ülevaadet laevaehituse materjalidest ja on tutvunud vastava tehnoloogiaga;
• teab metallurgilisi meetodeid;
• tunneb tehnoloogilise töötlemise erimeetodite füüsikalisi aluseid ja praktilise kasutamise võimalusi.

• Know the internal structures of metals and alloys, bases of classification , features, be able to determine their mechanical characteristics;
• be able to choose suitable methods of processing for production and repair detay including in shipbuilding, considering properties of materials and the existing opportunities;
• be able to choose the methods of corrosion protection;
• know and be able to choose on the basis of Reference and the predetermined conditions of metallic and non-metallic materials;
• knows the physical principles and possibilities of practical application of thermal processing
• is able to choose methods and the modes of heat treatment and welding;
• has the review about shipbuilding materials and has got acquainted with appropriate technology;
• knows metallurgical processes;
• knows physical bases and possibilities of application of processing technological methods.

Antakse ülevaade kaasaegsetest arengusuundadest materjalide valikul ja tehnoloogia võimalustest; õpitakse tundma materjalide struktuure ja omadusi, nende kujundamist, sh laevaehitusmaterjalid.Margi tähised, margivastavused. Metallurgia, valamine, survetöötlemine, pulbermetallurgia, keevitamine, keevitamise erimeetodid sh. lasertöötlus, lõiketöötlemine, metallilõikepingid ja -instrumendimaterjalid, viimistlusmeetodid, töötlemise täpsus ja pinnasiledus, korrosioon ja selle tõrjemeetodid. Provides an overview of contemporary trends in the choice of materials and technological possibilities. Learning about the structure and properties of materials, their transformation, including the shipbuilding materials. Marking and compliance of materials. Metallurgy, casting, pressure processing, powder metallurgy, welding, welding special methods, including laser cutting, machining cutting, metal cutting machine tools and tool materials, finishing methods, processing accuracy and surface roughness, corrosion and its control techniques.
