Laevamehaanikule vajalike teadmiste ja oskuste omandamine vastavalt STCW-78 koos lisadega A osa ptk. III jaotise A-III/2 nõuetele:
- laeva trimmi, püstuvuse ja pingete kontrollimiseks
- õigusnõuete ja meetmete täitmise jälgimiseks ja kontrolliks, et tagada inimelude kaitse merel, turvalisus ja merekeskkonna kaitse
- laeva, laevapere ja reisijate ohutuse ning turvalisuse, ja pääste-, tuletõrje ja muude ohutussüsteemide töökorras oleku tagamiseks
- ohuolukorra ja selle ohjamise plaanide koostamiseks ja ohuolukordades tegutsemiseks

An engineer officer necessary knowledge and skills acquisition in accordance with requirements of part A Ch. III Section A-III/2 of STCW-78, as amended:
-Control trim, stability and stress
-Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements and measures to ensure safety of life at sea and protection of the marine environment
- Maintain safety and security of the vessel, crew and passengers and the operational condition of life-saving, fire-fighting and other safety systems
- Develop emergency and damage control plans and handle emergency situations

Õppeaine positiivse tulemusega sooritanud üliõpilane
teab ja oskab rakendada:
- rahvusvahelistesse lepingutesse ja konventsioonidesse kätketud rahvusvahelist mereõigust.
- 1974. aasta rahvusvahelise konventsiooni inimelude ohutusest merel (ja selle hilisemate muudatuste) asjakohastest nõuetest tulenevaid kohustusi
- kahju vähendamiseks ja laeva päästmiseks võetavaid meetmed tulekahju, plahvatuse, kokkupõrke või madalikule sõitmise järel.
oskab:
- tagada pääste-, tuletõrje ja muude ohutussüsteemide töökorrasolekut
-korraldada tuletõrje- ja laevalt lahkumise õppusi
- hinnata vigastatud laeva püstuvust ja ujuvuse tagavara

When having successfully passed the course, the student:
knows and is able to implement:
- relevant international maritime law embodied in international agreements and conventions
- responsibilities under the relevant requirements of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)
- actions to be taken to protect and safeguard all persons on board in emergencies (fire, explosion, collision, running aground)
able to:
- maintenance of operational condition of life-saving, fire-fighting and other safety systems
- manage fire and abandon ship drills
- analyze of the effect on trim and stability of a ship in the event of damage to and consequent flooding of a compartment and counter measures to be taken
