The aim og this course is to help students understand how international trade works and how it affects logistics, including maritime transport, and the fundamentals of maritime transport and its elements.

Õppeaine läbinud üliõpilane:
- kirjeldab rahvusvahelise kaubanduse toimimise põhimõtteid;
- selgitab logistika olemust;
- kirjeldab mereveonduse toimimise põhimõtteid ja seostab meremajandus erinevaid osi (merendusklastri alamklastreid) ning meremajandust teiste majandusvaldkondadega (rahvusvaheline kaubandus, logistika);
- kirjeldab üldiselt sadamat.

After completing this course the student:
- describes the principles of how international trade works;
- explains the nature of logistics;
- describes the principles of the functioning of maritime transport and relates the different parts of the maritime industry (sub-clusters of the maritime cluster) and the maritime industry to other economic sectors (international trade, logistics);

Väliskaubanduse olemus. Merkantilism, absoluutne ja suhteline eelis, toote elutsükli teooria, riiklik konkurentsieelise teooria. Kaitsemehhanismid väliskaubanduses. Majandus- ja kaubandusorganisatsioonid. Globaliseerumine. Kaubandusbilanss, kaubandusdefitsiit. Merkantilism, absoluutne ja suhteline eelis, toote elutsükli teooria, riiklik konkurentsieelise teooria.
Logistika – mõiste, osad, üldine toimise põhimõte, transpordiliigid, nende plussid-miinused.
Meretranspordi roll ning sadamate roll rahvusvahelises kaubanduses.
Meremajanduse käsitlusala. Merendusklaster. Laevandussektori põhilised seosed. Laevanduse eritunnused. Laevandusturg, alamturud. Meretranspordi nõudlus – merekaubandus maailmas, kaupade jaotus, olulisemad kaubavood, olulisemad marsruudid, meretranspordi nõudlust mõjutavad tegurid. Meretranspordi pakkumine – veomaht, pakkumist mõjutvad tegurid.
Sadama mõiste, sadamate roll transpordis ja logistikas. Sadamate areng läbi aegade, sadamate generatsioonid. Sadamate valitsemisvormid ja haldussüsteemid. Sadamate arendamise kriteeriumid. Sadama põhielemendid.

The nature of foreign trade. Mercantilism, absolute and comparative advantage, product life cycle theory, national competitive advantage theory. Protection mechanisms in foreign trade. Economic and trade organisations. Trade balance, trade deficit.
Logistics - definition, components, general operating principle, modes of transport, their advantages and disadvantages.
The role of maritime transport and the role of ports in international trade.
Scope of maritime industry. The maritime cluster. Main connections in the shipping sector. Specific characteristics of shipping. Shipping market, sub-markets. Demand for maritime transport - world seaborne trade, distribution of goods, main trade flows, main routes, factors affecting demand for maritime transport. Maritime transport supply - transport capacity, factors affecting supply.
The concept of port, the role of ports in transport and logistics. Development of ports over time, port generations. Port governance and management systems. Criteria for port development. Key elements of a port.
