VERSION SPECIFIC DATA
course aims in Estonian
course aims in English
The goal of the course is to give examples of contemporary biophysics and biomechanics problems.
Understand how the laws of physics can explain body structure and function of humans and animals.
Learn to apply principles of physics when solving tasks associated with animal and human locomotion.
Learn how to independently search more information about topics in biomechanics
learning outcomes in the course in Est.
Tunneb biofüüsika ja biomehaanika alustalasid; omab näidete varal ülevaadet füüsika meetodite rakendamisest bioloogiliste süsteemide uuringus; omab oskust kriitiliselt hinnata biofüüsika vallas tehtud teadustöid.
learning outcomes in the course in Eng.
Knows biophysics and biomechanics fundamentals; examples on application of physics methods to study biological systems; how to critically evaluate a work in biophysics.
brief description of the course in Estonian
Sissejuhatus biofüüsikasse ja biomehaanikasse: harud, põhimõisted ja -meetodid. Elusorganisimi ülesehitus: organism, organ, kude, rakk, organell, molekulid. Näited füüsika rakendamisest bioloogiliste süsteemide uuringus. Õppejõu poolt valitud teadusartikli põhjalik analüüs tutvustamaks tudengitele teadusartikli raames tehtud töö kriitilist analüüsi ja hindamist. Biofüüsika ja biomehaanika valdkonna teadusartiklite kriitiline analüüs seminari vormis (üliõpilased viivad läbi eelmisel aastal ilmunud teadusartikli kriitilise analüüsi arutelu vormis). Osana eksamist tuleb tudengil välja pakkuda uurimisviis analüüsitud teadusartiklite põhjal.
brief description of the course in English
Introduction into biophysics and biomechanics. Living matter as a hierarchy: organism, organ, tissue, cell, organelle, molecules. Examples of the approaches from physics applied in studies of the biological systems. Analysis of a selected paper by the teacher to introduce students to critical evaluation of the published work on biophysics. Critical evaluation of the papers on biophysics and biomechanics by students through discussion in the class. As a part of the final exam, each student would have to make a research proposal on the basis of the analysed papers.
