Kursuse peamiseks eesmärgiks on anda põhjalik ülevaade sotsiaalteaduste olemusest, kasutavatest meetoditest ja teadusliku analüüsi läbiviimise etappidest. Kursuse oluliseks eesmärgiks on, et selle läbinud üliõpilased oskaksid planeerida doktoritöö metodoloogiat ning hinnata konstruktiivselt ja kritiseerida teaduslike artikleid ja uurimistöid metodoloogilisest seisukohast. Kursuse täiendavateks eesmärkideks on:
• Anda põhjalikke teoreetilisi teadmisi sotsiaalteaduste olemusest ja peamistest dilemmadest sotsiaalteadusliku uurimistöö tegemisel.
• Anda ülevaade viimase aja arengutest sotsiaalteaduste metodoloogilises diskursuses.
• Selgitada erinevate sotsiaalteaduslike metodoloogiate ontoloogilisi ja epistemoloogilisi aluseid.
• Tutvustada erinevaid meetodeid, mida sotsiaalteaduslikus uurimises on võimalik kasutada.
• Pakkuda konstruktiivset kriitikat erinevate metodoloogiliste lähenemist osas.
• Käsitleda uurimise disaini ja erinevaid etappe uurimistöö protsessis.
• Anda konkreetseid juhiseid, kuidas viia läbi võrdlevat analüüsi ja juhtumi analüüsi, kuidas koguda andmeid küsimustike ja intervjuude abil, kuidas analüüsida kogutud andmeid.
• Käsitleda kvantifikatsiooni küsimusi ja probleeme sotsiaalteaduste kontekstis.

The goal of the course is to give a thorough overview of the nature of social sciences, research methods and the different phases of scientific inquiry. The main of the course is that those who have passed it would be able to plan their research for their PhD thesis and to be able to evaluate and criticise constructively other scientific articles and studies from the methodological point of view.

The additional goals of the course are:
• To give a thorough overview of the nature of social sciences and of the main dilemmas in conducting social scientific research.
• To offer an overview of the recent developments in the methodological discourses of the various social sciences.
• To explain the ontological and epistemological foundations of various methods used in social sciences.
• To introduce different methods that can be used in social scientific inquiry (qualitative vs quantitative methods).
• To offer constructive criticism about the various methods used in social sciences.
• To provide guidance on research design and elaborate on the different phases of research process.
• To give specific instructions on how to conduct a comparative analysis and a case study, how to collect data by using questionnaires and interviews and how to analyse the collected data.
• To clarify the issues of quantification in social sciences

1. Oskab paika panna oma doktoritöö metodoloogia.
2. Valib uurimusküsimusele vastates kõige sobivama meetodi.
3. Tunneb ja oskab kasutada peamisi kvantitatiivseid ja kvalitatiivseid meetodeid.
4. Suudab edukalt küsimustikke koostada, küsitlusi ja intervjuusid läbi viia.
5. Teeb vahet ja kasutab erinevaid andmete analüüsimise tehnikaid ja analüüsi strateegiaid.
6. Oskab kritiseerida erinevaid meetodeid.

1. Is able to decide on the methodology to be used for the doctoral thesis.
2. Chooses the most suitable method(s) for answering a particular research question.
3. Knows and is able to use the main qualitative and quantitative approaches in social scientific research.
4. Can conduct interviews and surveys and criticise questionnaires and interview instruments used by others.
5. Distinguishes and is able to use different strategies and tactics for analysis of data.
6. Is able to bring pro and contra arguments for using different kinds of methods.

Kursuse eesmärk on põhjalike teoreetiliste ja praktiliste teadmiste andmine sotsiaalteaduse olemusest, peamistest diskursusest sotsiaalteaduste metodoloogia-alastes vaidlustes, samuti teadusartikli kirjutamiseks vajaminevate praktiliste oskuste arendamine. Kursus annab ülevaate erinevatest meetoditest, mida sotsiaalteaduslikus uurimises on võimalik kasutada (kvalitatiivsed vs kvantitatiivsed meetodid), toob välja peamised mõisted, mida uurimistöö tegemisel või hindamisel tuleb silmas pidada, käsitleb uurimise disaini ja erinevaid etappe uurimistöö protsessis, annab konkreetseid juhiseid, kuidas viia läbi võrdlevat analüüsi ja juhtumi analüüsi, kuidas koguda andmeid küsimustike ja intervjuude abil, kuidas analüüsida kogutud andmeid. Lisaks praktilistele juhistele käsitleb kursus ka epistemoloogia, metodoloogia ning kvantifikatsiooni küsimusi ja probleeme avaliku halduse kontekstis.

The aim of the course is to offer thorough theoretical and practical knowledge about conducting research in social sciences, an overview of the main discourses on the methodological debates in social sciences, and provide guidelines for writing a scientific article. The course will provide an overview of the different kinds of methods that can be used in social sciences (qualitative vs quantitative methods), explain the main concepts of scientific work, explain the need for and the essence of research design, and elaborate on the different phases of research process. The course will give detailed guidelines on how to conduct a case study and a comparative study, how to collect information with the aid of interviews and questionnaires and how to analyse the collected data. In addition to practical issues, the course will address the questions of epistemology and methodology and the issues of quantification in social sciences.

Iseseisev kirjalik töö peab sisaldama järgmiseid elemente:
• Toob välja planeeritava uurimistöö uurimiseesmärgi ning selgitab valitud uurimiseesmärgi olulisust.
• Kirjeldab, kuidas on planeeritavas uurimistöös seotud teoreetiline ning empiiriline osa.
• Selgitab, milliseid kvalitatiivseid ja/või kvantitatiivseid meetodeid uurimistöös planeeritakse kasutada.
• Põhjendab, miks antud meetodid on valitud, toob välja, kuidas antud meetodid aitavad vastata püstitatud uurimisküsimusele.
• Toob välja planeeritava uurimistöö erinevad etapid.
• Selgitab, millised on valitud uurimisküsimuse ning uurimismeetodite puhul eeldatavad raskused ja probleemid.
• Analüüsib, kuidas eeldavaid probleeme on võimalik ennetada ja lahendada.
• Märgib ära kolm teaduslikku ajakirja, kuhu selle planeeritava uurimistöö võiks esitada ning põhjendab antud valikut.

Content of the written assignment:

The goal of the independent work is to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the course for developing the methodology for an article in the PhD thesis. The assignment should include:
1) Research question;
2) Explanation about why this research question is important and relevant;
3) What would be the main theoretical perspectives used for addressing the chosen research question and how would the theoretical and empirical part of the study would be connected.
4) An overview of the methodology that is planned for the article in the PhD thesis.
5) Reasons for choosing the particular methodology and how this methodology would enable one to find answers to the posed research questions
6) Overview of what the planned steps for the research process are.
7) What are the expected problems and difficulties that one is likely to face in the course of the planned research process.
8) The assignment should indicate three academic journals where the article could be published and why.
